LSARRC News 14th May 2019

Lytham St Anne’s junior athletes had a weekend of personal best performances starting at the Lancashire County Athletics Championships held at Stanley Park over the weekend.  Saturday saw under 13 girl Clemmie Tierney achieve personal bests in the long jump with a jump of 3.69m and in the 100m with a time of 15.6.  Tierney returned on Sunday to produce another personal best in the 200m with a time of 32.3s.   Under 15 girl Rebecca Fisher competed in 4 events over the 2 days including 3 personal best performances of 1.35m in the high jump, 7.64m in the shot and a distance of 21.95m in the discus which was good enough to earn her 3rd place and a bronze Lancashire medal.  Fisher also finished 4th in her heat of the 75m hurdles in a time of 13.8s missing out on the final by just 0.1s.  Younger sister Charlotte competed in the 70m hurdles finishing 6th in her heat in a 14.5s.

In only her second ever race over the distance Maddy Markham ran a good tactical race to finish 3rd in the under 17 women’s 3000m in a personal best time of 11m 11.3s earning her a Lancashire bronze medal.

There were more excellent performances for Lytham junior athletes at Lytham Hall parkrun with 13 year old Sophie Bohannon 4th overall in 19:33, Oliver Thomson (8th in 20:33), Freddie Markham (26th in 26:04) and James McAfee (197th in 31:49) all running personal best times.

2 of Lytham’s junior athletes took part in the Beaverbrook’s 10k fun run on Sunday.  10-year-old Finlay Hughes ran exceptionally well in his first attempt at the distance to finish 5th in the under 15 category in a time of 44:26 with Morgan Pritchard 11th in 48:11.
 
Lytham had their usual good turnout at the Park View Junior parkrun and filled the first 4 places with Jayden Richardson (1st in 7:20), Eric Wrigley (2nd in 8:02), Archie Belfield (3rd in 8:11) and Joe Alker (4th in 8:22).  Also representing Lytham were Bobby Hastwell (8th in 8:38), sisters Leoma and Rosa Gill (16th and 2oth in 9:55 and 10:35), Evie Alker (22nd in 10:46) and Joshua McAfee (59th in 13:38).

Rae Willoughby ran the Blackpool parkrun and managed 39:23, Liz Abbott was first overall at the Hereford parkrun in a great time of 17:57.  At the Hagley parkrun Richard Storey ran 22:41 for 71st position, whilst Kirsten Burnett completed the Cuerden Valley parkrun in 29:52 for 73rd.  Jonathon Tuck travelled to Preston and ran 20:19 for 21st spot.

The ladies deliver a strong performance at the interclub meeting.

 Thursday was LSARRC Interclub race. With the works on the prom we had to revise the course and it meant it was a bit shorter than usual with 4.6miles.  The weather was perfect dry, cool and a glimpse of sunshine. We had a strong team of 33 Lytham runners, the ladies showed a strong performance and finished the night on top of both ladies’ team and ladies v40 team.

At the parkrun in Newby Bridge 4 Lytham runners completed the course, these included Jason and Michelle Sheridan, Julie Wiseman and Sue Henry.  Scott Gall travelled to Newcastle to complete the parkrun there and Joanna Goorney was fist female at the Dolgellau parkrun.

A busy and successful week for Lytham St Anne’s RRC juniors started on Wednesday with under 13 Oliver Thomson competing in the Local Independent Schools Athletics Championships and taking 1st place in the 800m followed by 4th in the 1500m.

Thursday saw Under 17 athletes Laura Bremner and Adhamh Holton making their debut for Lytham’s home fixture of the inter club road league.  Bremner finished the 4.6-mile course in 34:16 to finish as first junior female.  Holton finished as 6th junior male in 33:23.

The 2ndfixture in the Mid Lancs. Track and Field league took place at Hyndburn on Saturday and Lytham were well represented.   Star of the day for Lytham was under 15 Rebecca Fisher who picked up a maximum 21 points finishing 1st in division 2 in the high jump with a height of 1.30m, 1st again in the shot put with a distance of 7.47m and 1st in her specialist event the discus with a distance of 20.13m.  Conditions were particularly difficult for the sprinters with a strong headwind.  Lytham had 3 under 13 girls in the 100m with Clemmie Tierney just getting the better of Amara Thorpe finishing in 16.3s and 16.5s respectively.  Charlotte Fisher also competed in the 100m finishing in 18.00s.  Thorpe and Tierney went on to compete in the long jump also jumping into a strong headwind did well with bests of 3.30m and 3.27m.  Final event for Tierney and Thorpe was the 200m where Tierney finished in 33.7s and 5th in division 2 just getting the better of her team mate who finished in 34.6s and 6th place.   Under 15 girl Brogan Murphy finished strongly in the 800m taking 1st place in division 2 equalling her season’s best time of 2.46s.  In the under 15 girls 1500m Sophie Bohannon continued her good recent form to finish in a personal best time of 5:05.5s despite a strong wind to take 2nd place in division 2.  Final athlete on the track for Lytham was under 13 boy Oliver Thomson in the 1500m.  In a very competitive trace Thomson well to finish 3rd in division 2 in a time of 5:33.5s.
Lytham juniors were out in force again on Monday at Avenham Park for the fun run and 5k race.  Lytham had 3 juniors in the 5k and first home for Lytham was 13-year-old Sophie Bohannon who ran exceptionally well to finish 14th overall and first female in an excellent time on a very hilly course of 19:40. 15 year old Maddy Markham finished in 27th in 20:25 with 13 year old Eric Wrigley 51st in 22:54. 

15 Lytham juniors lined up for the fun run and took the 1st seven places with Jayden Richardson taking first in 5:07s followed by Finlay Hughes (5;20), Archie Belfield (5:37), Joe Alker (5:37), Lewis Bentley (5:45), Max Walker (5:48), Bobbie Hastwell (5:51).  Also representing Lytham were Clemmie Tierney (11th in 6:05), Freddie Markham (12th in 6:08), Leoma Gill (15th in 6:35), Kiefer Richardson (16th in 6:41), Emily Wrigley (20th in 7:10), Rosa Gill (24th in 7:17), Evie Alker (25th in 7:17), Sebastien Koth-Wragg (29th in 7:29) and James McAfee (37th in 7:38), Joshua McAfee (72nd in 9:46).

Lytham juniors filled the first 3 places at Park View junior parkrun with Jayden Richardson (1st in 7:19), Joe Alker (2nd in a pb of 8:12), Archie Belfield (3rd in 8:20).  Bobby Hastwell, Leoma Gill and Rosa Gill all ran personal bests of 8:35, 9:30 and 10:28 respectively. Evie Alker finished 21st in 10:47 while Eric Wrigley ran with his sister Emily to both finish in 11:05.

13 year old Morgan Pritchard finished 20th in 21:33 at Saturdays Lytham Hall parkrun.

LSARRC News 30th April 2019

LSARRC runners impress at the London Marathon.

LSARRC were well represented at the London Marathon with 8 runners.

The weather was perfect, cold at the start and cool throughout the day. Melanie Koth and Sue Hawitt ran personal best times.  Koth ran over 3 minutes faster than her time in 2012, and Hawitt after gaining a place through the club ballot ran a 6-minute personal best time.  As ever the atmosphere was amazing, and it had a record breaking 42549 runners finishing!

Also, over the weekend 3 members of LSARR competed today in the Wray 10k Sat 27th April. Beautiful countryside but the weather was cruel, luckily the rain stopped just as we set off. The villagers make scarecrows on a different theme each year and display them outside their house. This festival runs on for a week with the fells race next week.

Lytham St Anne’s RRC junior athletes were out in force and competing with some success last weekend.  Despite the very challenging conditions of brutally strong winds Saturday saw 11 of Lytham’s juniors take part in the Blackpool Festival of Running 2k on North Promenade.  Lytham’s juniors filled the first 3 places with 9-year-old Jayden Richardson finishing 1st in 7:30, 11-year-old Lewis Bentley 2nd in 8:00 and 10-year-old Finlay Hughes 3rd in 8:05.  Next home for Lytham was 8-year-old Archie Belfield finishing 6th in 8:24 with 9-year-old Max Walker just one place behind in 8:34. First of the Lytham junior girls was 11-year-old Clemmie Tierney finishing 9th overall in 9:03.  Also flying the Lytham flag were 9-year-old Jessica McNiven (11th in 9:23), 11-year-old Leoma Gill (13th in 9:49), Kiefer Richardson (17th in 9:47), 11-year-old Ella Wiseman (20th in 10:11) and 9-year-old Rosa Gill 49th in 11:52).

Just 2 of Lytham’s juniors opted for the 5k with 15-year-old Maddy Markham continuing her recent good form ran an excellent race in the difficult conditions to finish with a time of 20:47 earning her 7th place overall and first female.  14 year old Brogan Murphy also ran well to take 14th place and 3rd female in 23:38. 

13 year old Sophie Bohannon chose to run the Lytham Hall parkrun and despite the windy conditions ran her 2nd fastest time for parkrun finishing 5th from 172 in 19:46.  Lucy Bohannon running her first parkrun for 18 months finished 82nd in 27:14.  Lytham juniors were well represented and also produced some good performances in Sunday’s Park View Junior parkrun.  In his second run of the weekend Jayden Richardson finished 1st in 7:40 and Finlay Hughes also in his second run of the weekend finished 2nd in a new personal best time of 7:55.  Lytham also finished 3rd with Joe Alker completing the 2k course in 8:24.  Also representing Lytham were Bobby Hastwell (6th in 8:55), Evie Alker (23rd in11:15) and James McAfee 31st in 12:12.

Lytham St Annes RRC junior athletes produced some excellent performances at Saturdays Lytham Hall 5k parkrun.  First home for Lytham juniors was 15-year-old Maddy Markham smashing her previous best time by 57 seconds to finish as first female and 15th overall in a time of 19:05.  Markham’s time makes her the second fastest ever in her JW15-17 age group at Lytham parkrun and Lytham’s fastest ever junior girl.  13-year-old Sophie Bohannon ran well to finish 20th overall and 1st in her age category equalling her personal best time of 19:39 a time which also places her 2nd in the all-time list for her JW11-14 age group at Lytham Hall parkrun.  Oliver Thomson ran his 3rd consecutive personal best time finishing 27th in 20:35.  Morgan Pritchard was celebrating his 13th birthday by running his 100th parkrun in his fastest time for 8 months to finish 34th in 20:58.  Also representing Lytham were 11 year old Clemmie Tierney finishing 147th in 26:11 and Joshua McAfee finishing 296th in a new personal best of 34:50.

5 Lytham Runners ran the Caldervale 10 miler on Good Friday.  A beautiful day in the country, with lovely views but a challenging undulating course.  Enjoyable refreshments were then served in the village hall. The results were as follows:  Catherine Carradus 1.11.12. First lady, Jennifer Hill 1.21.45, Pam Hardman 1.33.26. 1st Vet 60, Neil Tate 1.09.2, and Mark Hughes 1.40.29.  The ladies won the team event.

Lytham were also well represented at the Park View junior parkrun on Sunday.  First home for Lytham was 10-year-old Jayden Richardson finishing 3rd in a new personal best of 7:19 for the 2k run.  Joe Alker finished 6th also in a new personal best time of 8:16 just losing out to team mate Archie Belfield who finished 5th just 1 second ahead in 8:15.  Also representing Lytham were Bobby Hastwell (9th in 8:42), Freddie Markham (16th in 9:05), Evie Alker (33rd in 10:44), Emily Wrigley (34th in 10:52), Joshua McAfee (60th in 13:49) and Sophie Tate (71st in 15:53).

Junior Rebecca Fisher earns a gold for discus throw


Saturday saw Nine of Lytham St Anne’s RRC junior athletes attend Witton Park, Blackburn for the first fixture of the Mid Lancs. Track and Field League.

Star of the day for Lytham was under 15 girls Rebecca Fisher who competed very well in three events.  Rebecca won the discus with a throw of 20.97m over 5m clear of second place, picking up 7 points and smashing her personal best in the process.  Rebecca went on to finish 2nd in division 2 in both the 75m hurdles with a time of 13.8s and the high jump with a height of 1.30m earning a further 10 points.
 The first event on the track was the 100m where Lytham had 3 under 13 girls competing.  Quickest of the trio was Amara Thorpe who finished  3rd in her heat in a time of 15.4s earning 2 points for the club with Clemmie Tierney was not far behind in 15.8s for 1 point.  Also, in the under 13 race and making her first appearance on the track was Charlotte Fisher finishing 6th in her heat in a time of 16.9s.  Tierney and Thorpe went on to compete in the long jump and the 200m.  Tierney jumped very well in improve her personal best by 21cm to 3.65m for 11th place and 2 points.  Thorpe also jumped well to take 13th place with a best jump of 3.54m.  In the 200m Thorpe and Tierney 33.3s and 34.4s for 3 and 2 points respectively.  Charlotte Fisher went on to compete in her first ever hurdle race and despite hitting the penultimate hurdle managed to finish in 16.6s for 2nd place in division for 5 points.  Lytham’s only representative in the under 13 boys’ race was Finlay Hughes also making his debut on the track finishing in 16.6s and picking up 1 point for the club.

Under 15 boy Frankie Ball was tackling the 400m for the first time and ran exceptionally well to finish in 65.5s taking 2nd place in division 2 for 5 points.  Ball went one better in the 200m finishing in a personal best time of 28.3s and taking 1st place and 7 points in division 2.
Oliver Thomson was also making his track debut and ran well in the under 13 boys 1500m finishing 2nd in division 2 in a time of 5m 32s for 5 points.  Under 15 girl Brogan Murphy ran a very good tactical 800m race to finish 1st in division 2 in a time of 2m 46.6s picking up 7 points.  In her first year in the under 15 age group Sophie Bohannon ran well in a competitive race to finish 2nd in division 2 in an excellent personal best time in windy conditions of  5m 8.6s for 5 points.
Lytham filled the first 5 places in Sunday’s Park View junior parkrun.  First home was Jayden Richardson in a new personal best of 7m 28s.  Finlay Hughes in his second race of the weekend finished 2nd in 8m 8s closely followed in 3rd, 4th and 5th by Archie Belfield (8m 18s), Joe Alker (8m 28s) an James McAfee in a personal best  time of 11m 34s. Morgan Pritchard (35th in 11m 38s) and Joshua McAfee (61st in 14m 16s) also represented Lytham.

Three Lytham junior athletes ran in the Lytham Hall parkrun on Saturday with Morgan Pritchard running his 99th parkrun first home in 21m 27s for 27th place with Ben Gregson close behind in 21m 30s for 29th place.  10-year-old Freddie Markham ran well in his first 5k parkrun finishing 103rd in 26m 32s.

On Wednesday 10th  April Lytham’s Graham Webster returned to his preferred discipline to race in the first Northern Masters AC track meeting of the season hosted by Spenborough AC at Cleckheaton.  Webster competed in 3 events in just over 2 hours.  First event of the meeting was the 800m and Webster finished as 1st M65 in a time of 2m 50.7s.  Webster also finished as 1st M65 in the 1500m in a time of 5m 57.2s and as 2nd M65 in the 3000m in 12m 17s.

Julia Rolfe took part in the Radcliffe multi terrain 10k on Saturday.  A route that covered the trails, canal, roads and paths of Ringley, with a sharp uphill towards the finish.  Julia finished 2nd FV55 in 56.12.

Lots of LSARRC attended local parkrun and parkruns further afield.  At the Lytham parkrun first male and female spot went to Lytham runners, Hoe Greenwood and Joanna Goorney.  Other notable performances were Ross McKelvie coming 4th in 18:00 and Alistair Leivers 9th in 19:19, chased down by Neil Tate and Paul Veevers for 10th and 12th spot.  Dan Gregson and Bob Clough ran personal best times.  The Fleetwood parkrun was completed by Jennifer Hill, Jamaica Pond by Heid Haigh, John Bertenshawe completed the Blackpool parkrun, Kirsten Burnett travelled to Lancaster, Pamela Binns did the Preston park run and James Buckley completed the Pennington Flash parkrun.

Mel Koth 1st Lady at the Darwen Half Marathon

Sunday 7th April was the Darwen Half Marathon, with perfect weather conditions for a challenging race.  The course has very tough hills up and down but also the most beautiful scenery. It's not a pb course with its 1500feet of climbs but the great atmosphere and support made it a great race.
3 Lytham runners took part.  Mel Koth was the first 1st lady, 17th overall, 1:32:43, 16min faster than last year and 10min course pb.  Jennifer Hill 5th lady, 70th overall, 1:44:48 and Gavin Stansfield 79th overall, 1:46:02.

Also, over the weekend, Pendle interclub fell race took place on Saturday 6th April.  Pam Hardman & Julia Rolfe were the only LSARR members to attend the event.Hardman finished in 56.05 and Rolfe 58.27.  On a beautiful spring day where better than a race on. the fells, nice & dry under foot. A hard climb then a drop down to the valley to then climb up to a steeper climb but shorter and then downhill to the end, this was not easy but enjoyable.  A bottle of the local ale for all finishers.

As usual numerous club runners completed local parkruns.  Ross McKelvie was first home at the Lytham Hall parkrun coming 2nd in 18:32. Next senior was Alistair Leivers in 19:40 for 7th.  Graham Webster ran the course in 20:37 for 11th.  Neil Bayntun-Roberts came 21st in 21:21, and next to finish was Jennifer Hill who was the second female on the day to finish in 21:32.  Other finishers included:  Kev Murray, Susan Hawitt, Claire Markham, Trevor Roberts, Matthew Holton, Pamela Binns, Jeremy McCandless, Sue Henry, Julie Wiseman, Gillian Oliver, Robert Parker and Michelle Sheridan.    Catherine Carrdus was the first female finisher at the Preston parkrun and Joanna Goorney 2nd female at the Huddersfield parkrun.

Ten-year-old Charlotte Fisher competed in the Lancashire Schools Combined Events Championships held at Hyndburn over Saturday and Sunday.  Fisher did particularly well in the vortex howler throw taking first place with a distance of 23.59m.  Thirteen-year-old Frankie Ball was also competing on the track on Sunday at Trafford open track meeting.  Ball’s first event was the 800m where in a fast run race he finished in 4th place.  Ball went on to compete in his first ever 300m and ran very well taking the lead with 100m to go but his lack of experience over the distance meant he just got pipped on the line for first place.

As usual Lytham juniors were well represented at Lytham Hall parkrun.  First home for Lytham was 13-year-old Sophie Bohannon who ran exceptionally well finishing 6th overall and 1st female from 219 finishers in a new personal best time of 19:39. Oliver Thomson also ran a new personal best of 20:41 for 12th position overall and 1st in his JM11-14 age category.  12-year-old Morgan Pritchard, in his 98th parkrun, finished 18th in 21:11.  Also representing Lytham were Adamh Holton 37th in 23:21, Clemmie Tierney 75th in 25:23 and Matthew Holton 107th in 24:16.

Lytham juniors also had 5 athletes in the Park View junior parkrun on Sunday.  Joe Allker was the first Lytham athlete home in a time of 8:30 for 2nd place.  Bobby Hastell finished 5th in a time of 9:07.  Also running for Lytham were Evie Alker 14th in 10:49 and brothers James and Joshua McAfee finishing 32nd in 12:42 and 43rd in 13:54 respectively.

Junior Maddy Markham sets a 5K club record at Salt Ayre.

Friday evening saw four of Lytham St Anne’s RRC juniors make their way to Salt Ayre, Lancaster looking to run well competing in the Power of the 5k race.  They did not disappoint, first home for Lytham and running an excellent race to win the B race was 15-year-old Maddy Markham in a time of 19.16 smashing her previous personal best and currently ranking her 7th in the UK for 2019. Maddy also set a new LSARRC record for junior ladies and achieved a Gold club standard.

13-year-old Sophie Bohannon also ran very well to finish 3rd overall also in a huge personal best time of 19:27 ranking her 15th in the UK for 2019.  Sophie also achieved a Gold club standard.
Completing the Lytham junior contingent were 14-year-old Brogan Murphy finishing 14th in 22.03 just pulling away from team mate 16-year-old Laura Bremner who finished 16th in 22.17.  Both Brogan and Laura achieved Bronze club standards.

At Lytham Hall parkrun on Saturday not content with having ran a PB the night before Maddy Markham was the first LSARRC junior back in 17th place in a time of 21:03, Morgan Pritchard was 20th 21:16, and Clemmie Tierney 78th in a PB of 24:35,

At Park View junior parkrun on Sunday Jayden Richardson was in 1st place in 07:32, Finlay Hughes 3rd 08:04, Bobby Hastwell 7th in 08:39 a new PB, Jessica McNiven 10th a PB 09:04, Freddie Markham 11th 09:17, Joe Alker 17th 10.13 and James MacAfee 37th 13:09.

Four Lytham athletes made the short trip up to Lancaster on Saturday for the Mother’s Day 10k. Conditions were fair, and times were fast throughout the field with the temperature being close to perfect for road racing.

The race takes in the historic Lancaster quayside before heading out across the Millennium Bridge and along the river to the Morecambe Triangle before turning back to climb towards the finish in the shadow of Lancaster Castle.

Jennifer Hill was first lady home for Lytham in 44.30 after a fantastic start along the narrow first 400m. Jennifer was followed in by Susan Hawitt and Kathy Gaunt finishing in 49.57 and 50 minutes respectively, with Sue playing pacemaker. Ross McKelvie, running his third race in less than 24 hours, was 5th overall in a new personal best time of 36.45 for the distance
.
Also, on 30th March Sylvia Gittins ran the Coniston 14 in a great time of 2:28:29.

Other news, Julia Rolfe and Pam Hardman ran the Muddy Bottoms 9 miler yesterday 31st March, setting off from Bamber Bridge leisure centre, this was a map reading/instruction race through farm fields and trail paths, not muddy this year nice & dry and they really enjoyed it with a bonus of pies & pies at the end.  Time finished 1.59.27.

As usual Lytham members completed local parkruns. Joe Greenwood was first to finish at the Lytham Hall Park, parkrun finishing in 18:20, followed by Alex Tate for second in 18:39.  Joanna Goorney was the second female to finish the course in 19:56, Michelle Hook was 3rd female in 20:38.  Graham Webster was 14th overall in 20:57, and a second later Darran Ames.  Other results:  Mark Hughes 22:01, Claire Markham 23:29, Jason Sheridan 24:01, Trevor Roberts 26:56, Pamela Binns 27:47, Karen Lanigan 29:00, Sue Henry 29:25, and Jeremy McCandless 30:01.  Kirsten Burnett completed the Fleetwood parkrun, Gerry Browne travelled to Newby Bridge, Richard Storey completed the Hagley parkrun and Jonathon Tuck the Preston parkrun.
