Team LSARRC at the Interclub Grand Prix held
at Stanley Park in Blackpool. A record turnout of 35!

There has been no shortage of activity within Lytham St. Annes Road Runners Club as Spring competitions and events get underway.  First-of-the-series fixtures for both the Interclub Fell and Grand-Prix Competitions took place this week; the latter attracting a record number of Club representatives with a tremendous 35 running. At Stanley Park on Wednesday, with Lytham's strongest available runners defending the Club, a good outcome was hoped for. The record 235 entry meant a competitive challenge from the other clubs and Lytham was pleased to hold on to fourth place in the Open, third in the Vet 50s and Vet 60s and fifth in the Women's and Vets categories.  Leading the Lytham contingent home was Joe Greenwood, who fought a tight competition with Andy Draper, finishing in 14th and 15th  places respectively. In third position for the Club was Sam Banner, showing that his concentration on triathlon had not detracted from his running ability.  Fourth and first Vet 50 was Peter Cruse,  fifth was Thomas Howarth in 23:34 and in sixth, Simon Denye, another setting a course PB even after completing a gruelling marathon three days earlier.  Next in was Graham Webster, 2012 winner of his age category, and again first Vet 60.  Kevin Ashworth and Terry Hellings completed the Open team. The Lytham women were on good form, arriving back in the order Mel Koth, Katherine Hoyland and Laura Ashworth who, with Debbie Cooper and Pippa Hughes made up the team. The Vets' team consisted of Cruse, Webster, Ashworth, Hellings, Upton and Hirsh. Willie Richmond joined Cruse, Webster and Hellings for the Vet 50's and Roy Stevens and Janice Cobley, formed the Vet 60's with Webster.

LSARRC reached fifth in the Open, Vets and Vet 50s, fourth in the Women's and third in the Vet 60s. Of notable achievement and performance were members Sam Banner, who finished 6th in the Inter-Club and first Under 23 in 23rd position overall and Debbie Cooper who was 4th women in the Inter-Club, third counter in the Lytham Open team and 159th overall.  Terry Hellings returned to fell running after a break to secure 92nd place.

Roy Stevens competed in the Netherland’s Rotterdam marathon on Saturday in what could be described as Summer conditions – a very warm 21 degrees centigrade. He finished the 26.2 mile course in 4h 12m. Rob Goodall tucked yet another race under his belt as part of his ‘Farewell UK Tour’ as he prepares for life anew in Australia. This week, he ran the Flitwick 10k in Bedfordshire. He clocked a chip time of 53.50 and finished 408th in a field of 786 runners. Goodall enjoyed the undulating course and is now in preparation for another challenge on the list: a marathon. Pam Hardman entered her 1st duathlon on Sunday - 5k run 20k bike 5k run which consisted of a lovely course in harsh weather conditions. She raced a great race, despite some technical difficulties with bike gears.

All the hard work paying off: Simon Denye at the Blackpool
Marathon, on his way to a PB and Sub 3 hour finish.
Runners in the Blackpool marathon and half marathons on Sunday were given a timely burst of spring-time sunshine and the crisp and cool temperatures contributed to favourable racing conditions. Both races started and finished at the Bloomfield Road Football Stadium, fuelling a ceremonious atmosphere, and the 13.1 mile and 26.2 mile courses followed sections of the promenade. There was cause for celebration amongst the Lytham Road Runners competing. Simon Denye, the only Lytham member running the marathon, was the first local runner to finish in a highly creditable 22nd place, out of 636 finishers. He successfully broke the three hour barrier finishing in 2:59:29, knocking 12 minutes off his PB in the process. Denye has now achieved silver standard in the U40 category - a goal successfully achieved before his 40th Birthday in September. In the half marathon, Joe Greenwood strode home first for the club, finishing in 16th place in a field of 1048, in 1:21:23. Mark Selby shaved a pleasing 21 minutes off his previous half marathon time by finishing in 1:40:40, completing the race in 188th position. As club member Rob Goodall counts down his remaining weeks in the UK and gets ready for life in Oz, racing still has a firm place in his agenda. Goodall tied in the Lincoln 10k whilst visiting friends, and alongside fellow LSARRC member Mark Willett, joined 5000 entrants on the start line on Sunday. Bright and brisk weather conditions brought out a great support contingent for the two laps of Lincoln City, the race concluding with a stunning finish around the cathedral and into the Castle. Willett was first home in 157th with a chip time of 39:15 and a 27sec PB. Goodall clocked in with a chip time of 51:35, 1582nd finisher, and netting 42sec PB.

Pam Binns, Bob Clough and Dawn Lock.
For keen Lytham runners Easter weekend's cool crisp sunshine provided ideal running conditions, in a range of events and races, in contrast to the extreme winter weather of last weekend which forced several north-western running events to be cancelled.

The Easter period was preceded by the end-of-month Club Handicap on Thursday with nineteen taking part.  The three fastest men finished just two seconds apart in a hard fought battle particularly between Thomas Howarth in eighth place and Joe Greenwood ninth, timed in at 42:10 and 42:11 and both setting PBs. The Haigh Hall Relay Squad: L-R:
Sylvia Gittens, Roy Stevens, Richard Storey, Willie Richmond,
Graham Webster, Jim Whitworth, Greg Oulton, Katharine Hoyland.
The Haigh Hall Relays on Saturday proved to be a tough test the Lytham competitors. Held under damp conditions and a scattering of hail, runners raced tough legs of 3.75 miles descending from the highest to the lowest level of the Park with a challenging upward return. However Haigh Hall's woodland setting is inspiring in all weathers and, once again, it was a satisfying day out for Lytham members. Competing in the Vet Men's Team were Roy Stevens, 30:40, Richard Storey, 32:29 and Willie Richmond, 27:34 with the fastest time coming from third-leg runner Graham Webster whose 25:15 was the fifth best time by a vet and an excellent performance for a Vet 60.  The team finished fourth vets' team and 13th overall. Really shinning in Lytham's squad was Katharine Hoyland.  Leading out the Mixed Team, Hoyland was not only good on the tough hill but came up with the second best Lytham time, a very creditable 27:30, on this her first attempt at this tough course.  Teammates Jim Whitworth, Sylvia Gittins and Greg Oulton finished in 38:16, 36:41 and 33:46 respectively for an accumulated 2:16:13 for 16th place. LSARRC was delighted and not a little surprised to take a prize of pear cider and wine for their team performances.
First Lytham gent in the St Annes 10 miler, Nigel Thompson.

Elsewhere on Sunday, more creditable performances were being notched up by club members at the Trimpell 20. Race HQ was the Lancaster and Morcambe AC building, and the course followed a flat, fast course. Andy Draper, Simon Denye, Rob Goodall and Mark Willett all raced in cold but near perfect running conditions. The course headed towards Morecambe and around Trimpell triangle, then headed back towards the historic city of Lancaster, with Lancaster Castle, Lancaster Priory and the Ashton Memorial in view. Once across the Millennium Bridge the route met the Quayside before stretching out along the cycle path away from the city, towards Caton. Scenic views awaited competitors in the Lune Valley, before the course turned at Bullbeck and looped back towards Lancaster. It concluded by heading back to the Salt Ayre sports centre, finishing on the track. Andy Draper, in his first road race of the year, came in a great 6th with a PB of 2.02.50. Simon Denye, 30th overall, finished in 2.14.10 – also a PB claimant, and Mark Willett was delighted with his time of 2.25.36, 70th place and a considerable PB. LSARRC News 13th March 2013

The Lytham Road Runners have been out training and competing with their usual determination in multi-weather, multi-terrain conditions this week. Club activity has included road and fell racing as well as a residential training weekend. On Sunday Blackpool AC hosted 87 runners at the Stanley Park Spring 5k on a cold and blustery but sunny morning. Amongst Lytham representatives were Peter Cruse, first home for the Club in 16th  place overall, clocking 18m 51s. Following closely was Graham Webster, winning the V60 category in a respectable 17th place, 19:12. Willie Richmond came in 27th in a pleasing 20:31, and Lytham lady Fiona Geldard finished 50th in 24:49: much improved and a seasons best.

Debbie Cooper competed in the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round Fell Race on Saturday. The challenging course exceeded 10 miles and included 1936 feet of climb. The fog at top required a compass for navigation, however the weather cleared revealing beautiful views by the end. Cooper achieved a mighty PB by nearly 45 minutes, finishing the race in just under 1hr 50m. The event proved to have all the vital components of a good fell race: lots of tough climbs, deep bogs but stretches of scenic, runnable course also.

The Intrepid Malham Crew:
L-R Kev Ashworth, Laura Ashworth, Greg Oulton, Steve Quarmby,
Janice Cobley, Terry Hellings, Roy Upton, Catherine French, Pam Binns.
Malham in Yorkshire was the site of activity for the first residential Club training weekend of 2013. The toughest conditions ever at such an event were endured by thirteen brave (or foolhardy) members of the club. During scheduled runs, attendees tackled a blizzard, sub-zero temperatures and a biting icy wind. Prior to the weekend organisers had issued warnings about severe conditions in the hills compared to the lower shelter of the village. How right this proved to be. Saturday’s long run led runners up and out of the village into the face of a strong blizzard. It proved to be a challenge worth pursuing however as the surroundings were indescribable in their beauty. On the Sunday long run, a 9.5 miler, 9 intrepid Club participants climbed even higher than the previous day, up and around the scenic and atmospheric Malham Tarn. Snow fall was light but still covered the ground and conditions were bitter. A strong Easterly wind made the temperature feel at least five degrees below the actual zero degrees. Some t-shirt weather over the weekend was observed however - inside the Lister Arms next to the YH where the log burners were scorching. The Buck Inn also proved to be a good site for rehydration, supplying a great standard of real ale for the thirsty sprinters.

Willie Richmond completed the Ballycotton 10 race near Cork last week. In chilly conditions he finished in a chip time of 1:09:11 just 12 seconds outside of gold standard time. Of 2591 runners he finished in 431st place and was 13th MV 50. Mark Willett ran race number 28 of his ‘40 half marathons before 40’ challenge. He completed the cold and hilly Newton's Fraction Half in Grantham in 1hr 33. Tom Haworth competed in the Trafford 10k on Sunday finishing in 38:01.

Neil Bayntun-Roberts finished in 47.22, 129th followed by Adam Tostevin in 150th place, 48.37. Rob Goodall’s stream of PB success charged on strong and unbroken in this race; his 52.17 time for 200th place was his fastest by 1 minute. In close pursuit were Graham Young, 52.43, 205th and Pippa Hughes, 52.59, 207th.  Bec Willetts was 223rd finisher overall in 53.43, Jeremy McCandless came in comfortably under his 55 min goal in 54.50 for 239th place, James Whitworth finished 312th in 1.01.25 and Paula Macandless, another 10k debutante, completed the race in a creditable 1.03.40.

Rob Goodall well on his way to smashing the 2 hour target to bits.
The smile says it all...
The Lytham runners have been out in force showcasing their aptitude and enthusiasm at a range of running events across the north of England this week. From a total field of 1140 finishers, 15 members took to Blackpool Prom on Sunday for the 24th Great North West Half Marathon. The day stayed dry although there was a noticeably chilly and tough headwind north, into which runners headed at the start of the race opposite the Hilton hotel. The course returned southwards as far as North Pier, and followed another lap concluding the 13.2 miler at the start point. Joe Greenwood produced a brilliant performance, doing himself and the club proud with his 1.19.51 time, first home for Lytham and 28th  to finish overall. Pete Cruse, Simon Denye, Mark Willett and Graham Webster all finished within 1.30, with prizes scooped by Cruse for first M50, and Webster for first M60. Carla Rademan was first Lytham lady to finish, in a very creditable 1.49.58. Fiona Geldard was close behind, running a fantastic time of 1.54.52 in her first half marathon with the club. The champagne corks were popping for Rob Goodall, who, two and a half years after completing his first half marathon in 2.35.44, smashed the 2 hour barrier on his 12th attempt at this distance in a magnificent 1.57.09 – a PB of 4m 15s.

The Darwen moors were the site for a dark and icy 5 mile night-time fell race on Friday evening. Debbie Cooper, Catherine French, Rob Goodall and Greg Oulton  - by the light of head torch – braved the infamous ‘Mr Sparkles Dark Un’ hosted by the Darwen Dashers, all finishing around the 1.06 mark. Competitors were treated to a burst of disco and lights at the highest point and rewarded with a warming chip-butty at the finish.

Snowy Saturday saw the National Cross-Country Championships take place at Herrington Park, Sunderland. The terrain of this venue was challenging enough at the last championship held there in 2007 and this time, as the snow was churned to sludge, competitors were challenged to race through thick, grey mud.  The Club turned out full teams in both the men's and women's competition - the only Fylde club to achieve this standard. Senior members ran championship length courses of 8k for the women and 12k for the men.

Individuals contributing to the two teams were Mel Koth, 191st in 40:42, Katharine Hoyland, 203rd in 41:01, Fiona Geldard, 355th in 48:37 and Janice Cobley, 394th in 52:58 for the women and Thomas Howarth, 481st in 55:08, Graham Webster, 639th in 58:46, Terry Hellings, 669th in 59:34, Colin Laidlaw, 912th in 1:06:44, Colin Nelson, 918th in 1:06:57 and Willie Richmond, 924th in 1:07:25 making up the men's team. Especially good performances came from Koth, Hoyland and Geldard and Howarth, Webster and Hellings. Outside the teams but contributing to this spirited event were Pam Binns, 401st in 53:48 who increasingly is running the off-road well, Dawn Lock, 424th in 1:03:35 and Greg Oulton who completed two laps in 53:48.

Lytham's Nigel Thompson raced in the popular Pocklington Snake Lane 10, in his home county of Yorkshire, to clock 1:00:23 for 46th place. In the Buttermere 34k Peter Cruse finished 28th in 2:56:38.
