LSARRC at the Fairclough 5

On Friday evening 2 Lytham athletes made their way to Salt Ayre, Lancaster to compete in the Power
of 5k race.  Both entered the A race with Ross McKelvie finishing 14th in 17:29 and Michelle Chadwick 26th and 4th female in 19:23. 

Barbara Holmes completed the Helvellyn Trail challenge 15k on Saturday in 1:21:10 to comfortably win the FV60 category.

The Fairclough 5 and associated junior I mile race were held at Stannah Country Park on Sunday and Lytham St Annes RRC were represented by 13 athletes including 5 of their junior athletes.  In the 1 mile race 14 year old Sophie Bohannon ran excellently to comfortably finish first with a time of 5:38.  Lytham’s 10 year old Freddie Markham finished 3rd overall and 1st boy inn 6:26 completing a successful weekend’s racing having run a personal best time of 22:30 in Saturdays Lytham Hall 5k parkrun to finish 22nd overall and  1st in his JM10 age category.  Also running a personal best time at parkrun of 22:26 was 11 year old Eric Wrigley who finished one place ahead of team mate Markham and 2nd in his JM11-14 age category.

Mike Toft

In the 5 mile race Mike Toft was 1st home for Lytham finishing 2nd in 26:52 breaking his own seniors men’s club record.   Despite missing the start by a few seconds and having to start at the back of the race Ross McKelvie made his way through the field to eventually finish 3rd in 30:10 and with Neil Tate (7th in 31:06) joined Toft to take the men’s team prize.  The next 3 home for Lytham were all juniors. 

First home for Lytham’s junior athletes was 16 year old Maddy Markham finishing 13th overall and as 1st female in a time of 33:24 beating many older more experienced athletes.. 15 year olds Ben Gregson and Brogane Murphy both in their first 5 mile races ran well to finish 28th and 33rd overall in 37:16 and 38:06 respectively.   Maddy Markham and Brogane Murphy were joined by Maddy’s mother Claire Markham (40th in 39:26 and 1st FV45) to take the prize for 1st female team.   Next home for Lytham was Pam Hardman finishing in 39:42 and picking up to prize for 1st FV60.  Lytham also took 1st and 2nd prize in the FV70 age category with Pam Binns (1st FV70m in 46:37) and Sylvia Gittins (2nd FV70 in 47:39).  Also representing Lytham was Greg Oulton (73rd in 45:32).  A very successful trip for Lytham St Annnes RRC with 1st girl and boy in the junior race and in the 5 mile race 2nd male,  1st female, 1st male and female teams,  and 3 age category 1st places.

Saturdays Lytham Hall parkrun returned to the previous 4 ½ lap course due to part of the current course being flooded but despite the conditions 16 of Lytham’s seniors took part.  Lytham athletes finished 1st and 2nd with Alex Tate (1st in 18:40) getting the better of team mate Paul Veevers (2nd in 18:51).  Also representing Lytham were Mark Selby (5th in 20:36), Chris Bowker (8th in 21:22), Gill Draper (20th in 22:25), Neil Tate (23rd in 22:30), Gerry Browne (29th in 23:32), Stephen Wise (31st in 23:42), Kev Murray (44th in 27:47), Adrian Sargeant (61st in 26:15), Jen Trohear (67th in 27:57), Calire England (73rd in 29:11), Kirsten Burnett (75th in 29:43), Robert Parker (83rd in 31:45), Julie Wiseman (104th in 39:32) and Sue Henry (105th in 39:33).  Julia Rolfe chose the Preston parkrun and finished 107th in 26:45 and Laura Byrne ran the Penrith parkrun in 27:55 for 137th place. 
    
In Sunday’s Park View junior parkrun Lytham’s juniors took the 1st two places with Jayden Richardson again finishing 1st in 8:17 and Joe Alker 2nd in 8:36.  It is over 6 months since Richardson failed to finish 1st in Park View’s junior parkrun.   Also representing Lytham were Evie Alker (19th in 10:49), James McAfee (28th in 12:23), Georgina Andrews (29th in 12:24) and Joshua McAfee doing the tail walkers job finishing in 22:52.

Start of the Green Drive 5

Sunday was Lytham St Annes RRC’s main event of the year – The Green Drive 5, a 5 mile road race starting and finishing in the attractive Green Drive enhanced by the autumnal colours. This was the 20th running of the race, the 15th consecutive year the race has been awarded the privilege of hosting the Lancashire Championships and was again a sell-out.  The main event is preceded by the Green Drive mile which takes place on an out and back course entirely within Green Drive.  Lytham were well represented in both races.

In ideal running conditions Lytham’s women performed particularly well in the 5 mile race with Michelle Chadwick (45th in 32:38), Felicity Wolohan (62nd in 34:21) and Barbara Holmes (72nd in 36:05) finishing as 1st team and Lancashire Champions.  Chadwick also picked up the Lancashire bronze medal finishing as 3rd female.  Holmes was joined by Claire Markham (107th in 38:37) and Pam Hardman (115th in 39:12) to finish as Lancashire Champions Veterans team.  Holmes broke the club 5 mile record for her FV60 age group by nearly 5 minutes and along with Hardman finished 1st and 2nd in the FV60 category with Markham picking up the FV45 1st prize.  Pam Binns picked up the prize as 1st FV70 finishing 227th in 46:09 reducing her own club record by 24 seconds.  The men’s team of Alistair Leivers (18th in 29:0), Ross McKelvie (21st in 29:29) and Thomas Howarth (24th in 30:00) finished just outside the Lancashire medals as 4th Lancashire team missing out on bronze by just 2 points.  The Lytham men’s veterans’ team of Andy Draper (26th in 30:08), Jonathon Tuck (38th in 31:10) and Neil Tate (51st in 32:50) also finished as 4th Lancashire team.

Also representing Lytham were Dominic Garrett (34th in 30:45), Chris Bowker (69th in 38:28), junior Maddy Markham (87th in 37:28), Kevin Murray (104th in 38:25), Mick Widdop 122nd 39:24), Mark Hughes (147th in 40:31), Matt Hill (149th in 40:52), Jen Trohear (168th in 42:49), Vicki Richardson (205th in 44:46), Liz Canavan (217th in 45:40), Carolyn Melvin 220th in 45:49), husband and wife Mark and Sarah Gill (258th and 259th in 48:06 and 48:07), Debbie Francis (280th in 51:02), Catherine Maclachlan (305th in 54;31), Sarah Bagshaw 325th in 59:16) an Sue Henry doing the tail runners job (332nd in 1:23:08).

Start of the Green Drive junior mile

In the Green drive mile race Lytham’s junior athletes made up 26 of the field of 85   First home for Lytham was 14 year old Sophie Bohannon finishing 6th overall and 1st in her age group in a time of 5:53.  Jayden Richardson (7th overall and 2nd in the M10 age group) just held off team mate Ben Gregson (8th and 1st M15) both finishing in 5:58.  Oliver Thomson(10th and 1st M12) completed the winning Lytham boys’ team.  Also finishing 1st in their age groups were 9 year old Max Walker (13th in 6:36), 13 year old Evie Houlihan (18th in 6:37), 7 year old Bobby Hastwell (23rd in 6:51) and 10 year old Isabel Tuck (28th in 7:09).  Also representing Lytham were Morgan Pritchard (10th in 6:08), Finlay Hughes 13th in 6:22, Freddie Markham (15th in 6:35, Max Healy (17th in 6:37), Adam Jackson (21st in 6:40), Jessica McNiven (34th in 7:27), Leoma Gill (35th in 7:29), Lucas Tuck (36th in 7:29), Eleanor Francis (39th in 7:35), Georgina Andrews (46th in 7:58), Kiefer Richardson (48th in 8:07) Lewis Ames (54th in 8:25), Emily Wrigley (57th in 8:31), Joshua McAfee (58th in 8:35), Rosa Gill (59th in 8:35), Lucy Andrews (62nd in 8:45), Joe Alker (63rd in 8:53) and Evie Alker (64th in 8:53).

Just 3 of Lytham’s juniors took part in the Lytham Hall parkrun on Saturday with most of them saving themselves for Sunday’s Green Drive 5 and 1 mile races.  First home for Lytham’s juniors was Oliver Thomson finishing 7th overall and 1st in his JM11-14 age group in a time of 21:05.  Adhamh Holton finished 21st in 23:05 with brother Matthew Holton 33rd overall and 3rd in his JM11-14 age group in in 23:50.

Lytham seniors were out in force at Lytham parkrun with 27 Lytham members running although many were taking it easy as they were also running the next day in the Green Drive 5.   Lytham also had 2 athletes at Preston parkrun with Catherine Carrdus finishing ad 1st female in 19:50 and John Bertenshaw 49th and 3rd VM60 in 22:40.

Marathons galore for LSARRC runners.
Sunday saw several Lytham runner’s complete half and full marathons around the North West. Pamela Binns attended the West Coast half marathon.  The race started in Preston and finished in Lytham St Anne’s.  Pamela was the 1st female veteran over 65 to complete the course in a fabulous time of 2:15:09, coming 154th overall out of 238 runners.

Sylvia Gittins, Lewis McAfee, Roy Stevens (with his daughter), Thomas Howarth, and Heidi Haigh completed the Chester marathon on Sunday.
The race is flat/undulating and started and finished at Chester racecourse.
From the start line the race heads through the town, passing the local Town Hall. The also pass Chester Cathedral, the split-level Middle Ages "Rows", Eastgate Clock, Amphitheatre and go through the ancient Roman Walls four times before leaving the City and heading across the Old Dee Bridge.

Runners then head out of Chester, via Pulford, crossing the border into the Welsh villages of Lavister and Rossett. The route then follows a small loop reaching the old village of Holt before crossing the ancient Roman bridge at Farndon, leading back to England.
Runners head back along the home stretch running through Churton, Aldford and Huntington to finish back at the racecourse and enjoy well-earned post run celebrations!

Thomas Howarth was first to finish in a great time of 2:59:31, breaking the 3-hour mark.  Overall, he came 118th.  Next was Sylvia Gittins in 3:02:12, then Lewis McAfee in 4:00:22, Roy Stevens in 4:09:54 and Heidi Haigh in 4:24:25.

Also, on Sunday Mel Koth completed the Rochdale half marathon.  The Williams BMW Rochdale​​​ Half Marathon, 10K and 1-mile Fun Run returned for its 5th year on Sunday, 6 October 2019​, raising lots of money for local and national charities.  Mel said it was a fantastic event, with a fun run before and a 10k after.  The race takes you a little up to town towards the canal, where you run along towards Hollingworth lake. The route takes you around the lake and there was lots of support and live bands before heading back to the canal path.  Mel said the conditions were mixed, sunshine, heavy rain and some strong winds.

Mel was the only Lytham runner, and this was her first race since having a calf/knee injury which meant she couldn’t run for 2 weeks.  However, Mel did surprisingly well.  At 9 miles everything was going to plan, and she was 2nd lady however due to her lack of training she found the end a little difficult.  However, she hung on in and finished 3rd lady, 44th overall out of 500 runners and she was 1st v45.

Lots of club runners attended the Lytham Hall parkrun.  Chris Bowker and Morgan Pritchard managed the course in under 22 minutes.  Bowker ran 21:36 for 8th and junior Morgan Pritchard was 9th in 21:44. Ben Gregson was next home in 22:08 for 14th followed by Lewis McAfee in 23:19 for 31st.  Another highlight was Simon Smith who gained a new personal best time of 24:32 for 64th.  Other finishers were Jason Sheridan, Kev Murray, Susan Hawitt, Stephen Wise, Jennifer Hill, Eric Wrigley, Dan Gregson, Freddie Markham, Claire Markham, Greg Oulton, Leoma Gill, Maddy Markham, Jacqui Murray, Adrian Sargent, Claire England, Maria Tierney, Elizabeth Canavan, Laura Byrne, Rosa Gill, Ruth Bye and Michelle Sheridan.

Four Lytham runners made the short journey to Stanley Park, Blackpool to complete the parkrun and they were Adhamh Holton, Matthew Holton, Rebecca Willetts and Robert Parker.  Kirsten Burnett ran the Morecambe parkrun and Sue Henry did the Delamere parkrun.  Joanna Goorney was the first female home at the Huddersfield parkrun and Catherine Carrdus was second female at the Southport parkrun, also in attendance was Graeme Bertenshawe.  Another great run by one of our ladies, Michelle Chadwick was second female home at the Preston parkrun.

At the junior park run at Park View in Lytham the first 3 to finish ere Lytham runners, Jayden Richardson, Freddie Markham and Joe Alker.  Georgina Andrews and Evie Elker also finished the course.

Success for LSARRC at Ulverston cross-country fixture.
 
The first fixture of the cross-country season saw Lytham Road Runners competing at Ulverston. Conditions were near enough perfect despite the rain earlier in the day.

Nine members took part in the Senior Men’s race. Plaudits go to Mike Toft who was the first to complete the 9.1km course for Lytham in a time of 33:33 and 8th position overall. More Lytham runners followed with Jonathan Tuck (57th in 38:17), Andy Draper (58th in 38:18), Neil Tate (66th in 38:59), Dominic Garrett (69th in 39:10), Alex Tate (71st in 39:21), Chris Bowker (180th in 47:18), Peter Thomson (221st in 54:37) and Greg Oulton (227th in 58:39).

The excellent results meant that the Senior Men’s Team (Toft, Tuck, Draper, N. Tate, Garrett and A.Tate) finished 6th in the category, scoring 6 points in Division 2 to leave them in 2nd place.

The Senior Men’s (V40) Team (Tuck, N.Tate, Thomson and Oulton) finished 15th in the category, scoring 1 point in the Vet 40 Division 2 to leave them in 7th place.

The next cross-country event will take place on 9th November at Wilson Playing Fields, Hyndburn.

The Lytham ladies team performance shone at the first cross country event of the mid Lancs league season at the GSK sports club, Ulverston.  Although muddy underfoot the weather conditions were near perfect for the variable 6.4K course.  There were 6 ladies representing the club.  First home was Barbara Holmes (30:08) followed by Sue Hawitt (34:14), Claire Markham (34:26), Kirsten Burnett (41:58), Sylvia Gittins (46:12) and Catherine Maclachlan (47:49).  Overall team positions were 18 and 39. Lytham also achieved 11th V35 team place out of a total of 18 teams, 4th V35 team place and 3rd V55 team place.  The performance at Ulverston has ensured a solid start to the cross-country season to be built on as we go on through future fixtures.

On Saturday 28th and 13 of Lytham’s junior athletes made the trip to the first cross-country fixture of the year.

Rosa Gill was Lytham’s sole representative in the first race of the day - the under 11 girls’ race and ran well to complete the 2.2k race in 12:14 for 42nd place.  Lytham’s team in the 2.2k under 11 boys’ race was led home by Archie Belfield finishing 17th in 8:42 with team mates Freddie Markham (33rd in 9:30) and Lucas Tuck (52nd in 10:39) both making their cross-country debut bringing the team home.  Under 13 girl Leoma Gill was Lytham’s only athlete in the 2.36k under 13 girls’ race and finished in 13:34 for 53rd position.   Lytham fielded full team in the 2.8k under 13 boys race with the team of Oliver Thomson (25th in 11:44), Finlay Hughes (37th in 12:16) and Eric Wrigley at the age of 11 already in his 4th cross country season (49th in 13:10) bringing the team home in 8th place. 

James Andrews and Morgan Pritchard are both in their first season in the under 15 age group and ran well to complete the 4.4k race in 18:06 and 19:13 for 24th and 31st places respectively. 

Under 15 girls Sophie Bohannon 6th in 10:54, Brogan Murphy 25th in 12:17, Evie Houlihan (no time/position as yet) completed the team.

Under 17 Women - Maddy Markham was the only LSARRC in her age group coming in 4th place in 18:10 over the 4.4k course.

Parkruns, Alistair Leivers ran the Coventry parkrun and G Browne completed the Fountains Abbey parkrun.  The Beeston parkrun was visited by Hannah McCandless.  The Lytham Hall parkrun was completed by Darran Ames, Emily Quin, Adhamh Holton, Jason Sheridan, Jen Trohear, Claire England, Elizabeth Canavan, Robert Parker, Sue Henry, Julie Wiseman, Michelle Sheridan, Kirsten Burnett, Ruth Bye, Graham Young, Jeremy McCandless and Ella Wiseman.  Lewis McAfee completed the Blackpool parkrun.

Seven junior LSARRC members ran at a very waterlogged Park View junior parkrun on Sunday. Jayden Richardson was in 1st place overall in a time of 07:59, Archie Belfield 08:26, Jessica McNiven 09:50, Roman Holmes 10:42, Georgina Andrews 10:59, Evie Alker 11:04 and James McAfee 11:46.

Gold for junior Max Walker at the North West Biathle series.

Junior Max Walker made it a quadruple, winning the 4th race in the North West Bialthle series, an incredible achievement.

Under 11 boy Max Walker took part in the 4th race in the North West Biathle series.  The event consists of a 400m run, a 50m swim followed by another 400m run.  Walker comfortably took 1st place and has now won all four races in the series. It was the turn of Lytham’s youngest athletes to shine last weekend.  Under 11 girl Jessica McNiven competed well in the Fleetwood triathlon completing the 400m swim in 4:14, the 4k bike ride in 10:55 and the 1200m run in 5:41 to comfortably take second place.

Other junior news, athletes took part in Saturday’s Lytham Hall parkrun.  Maddy Markham was first home for Lytham’s juniors finishing 9th overall, 1st in her age JW15-17 category and 1st female in 19:45.  Morgan Pritchard ran his best time for over 2 years finishing 17th overall and 1st in his JM11-14 age category in a time of 20:48.  Next home for Lytham was Oscar Holmes finishing 39th and 2nd JM11-14 in 23:01.  Freddie Markham and Rosa Gill both ran personal best times of 25:40 and 30:09 finishing 100th and 194th respectively.  James McAfee finished 243rd in 32:56.  At Park View junior parkrun on Sunday Lytham junior athletes filled 4 of the first 5 places.  Jayden Richardson finished 1st in 7:44 followed by Joe Alker (3rd in 8:38), Freddie Markham (4th in 8:41) and Adam Jackson (5th in 8:43).  James McAfee finished 15th in a new personal best time of 10:39 with Evie Alker 16th in 11:04.

At the Blackpool parkrun Layla Foley impressed running the course in 18:09 for the first female spot, and 3rd overall.  Stephen Wise travelled to Henley-on-Thames parkrun and Joanna Goorney was the first female home at the Storthes Hall parkrun.

Success for LSARRC at Lancaster and Fairhaven

Six senior and two junior club members made the journey to Lancaster to take part in the regular Power of 5 event at Salt Ayre race track on Friday evening.  This is a 3.75 lap, 5K course with no tight corners or road crossings and is ideal for anyone striving for a pb.  With near perfect weather conditions for the race the following results were achieved – Ross McKelvie (18:31), Catherine Carradus (18:42) 2nd female, Maddy Markham (20:29), Louise Cox, (21:03) John Bertenshaw, Brogane Murphy (22:16), Sue Hawitt (23:11) pb, Claire Markham (23:22).  The next 2 dates announced for this event are the 26th October and 6th December.

LSARRC at the Fairhaven Flyer 10k

 The Fylde Coast Runners 2nd Fairhaven Flyer 10K was well attended by Lytham runners on Sunday morning, fantastic ‘Spitfire’ medals being awarded to all that completed the course.  Setting off from the model Spitfire at Fairhaven Lake the route took the competitors down towards and around Lytham windmill and then back up to just beyond AKS school returning to the lake for the finish line.  There were several successes from the Lytham contingent with Neil Tate 1st male V40, Sue Hawitt 1st female V55, Juli Wiseman 1st female V60.  The event was well attended with 325 runners, an additional 80 compared to last year’s inaugural event.  The following times were recorded – Neil Tate (39:39), Darran Ames (43:34), Gerry Browne (46:51), Kev Murray (48:04), Sue Hawitt (49:23), Jason Sheridan (50:13), Claire Markham (50:19), Vicki Richardson (56:31), Jacqui Murray (59:19), Laura Byrne (1:00:17), Juli Wiseman (1:04:12), Sue Henry (1:05:33), Michelle Sheridan (1:07:15), Sarah Bagshaw (1:17:09).

Lytham Hall parkrun not taking place didn’t stop LSARRC club runners from doing another parkrun.  Lots of club members attended Stanley Park parkrun at Blackpool.  Ross McKelvie was 2nd in 18:32, and Jonathon Ladd was 5th in 19:56.  Gill Draper ran well to be the 2nd female finisher in 21:54.  Other finishers included Claire Markham 25:45, Peter Thomson 25:50, Maria Tierney 29:12, Robert Parker 29:46, Adrian Sargent 29:53.

In form Liz Abbott was the first female to finish the Preston parkrun in 18:15 coming 5th overall.  Jonathon Tuck completed the course in 19:12 for 8th overall and Michelle Chadwick was 2nd female in 20:39.  Pamela Binns completed the Brighton parkrun and G Browne travelled to Lancaster.  Kev Murray, Claire England and Jacqui Murray were closer to home and completed the Fleetwood Promenade parkrun. 

Several club members travelled to Kew Woods parkrun, Neil Tate was 4th overall in 19:42.  Other finishers were Jen Trohear, Greg Oulton, Michelle Sheridan, Julie Wiseman and Sue Henry.

Junior News
LSARRC juniors Maddy Markham and Brogane Murphy both ran at the Power of 5K race series on Friday night at Salt Ayre Sports centre, Morcombe. Markham was in 17th place, 2nd in her age group.  in a time of 20:29, Murphy was in 28th place and 3rd in har age group in a time of 20:29.

Maddy went on to run Blackpool parkrun on Saturday morning finishing in 27th place and 4th female  in a time of 22:13, five other LSARRC juniors also ran, Oliver Thompson 35th 22:48; Adhamh Holton 55th 23:59; Freddie Markham 94th 25:44; Matthew Holton 106th 26:13 and James McAfee 204th 30:27.

Also, on Saturday was Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde AC Open Meeting at Stanley Park.
Under 11 Jessica McNiven came 3rd in her heat for 80m in a time of 13.6, and 11th in 600m in 2:16.7.
U13 Amara Thorpe also came 3rd in her heat of 100m in a time of 14.9, 2nd in her heat for 200m in 31.6. and then went on to jump a PB of 3.71 in Long Jump.
U15 Sophie Bohannon came 2nd in 1500m in a time of 5:09.4
U13 Charlotte Fisher came 4th in 70m hurdles 14.3
U9 Archie Belfield won 600m in 2:04.8

Park View junior parkrun saw seven LSARRC juniors running on Sunday morning; Jayden Richardson 1st 07:45; Archie Belfield 3rd 08:14; Finlay Hughes 4th 08:32; Freddie Markham 5th 08:43; Bobby Hastwell 6th 08:53; Roman Holmes 13th 10:11 and Evie Alker 20th 10:48
Sunday also saw Rebecca Fisher competing at Wigan Athletics and securing a Bronze Medal in discuss with a throw of 21.70m.
