LSARRC News 14th October 2014

Ella at the Leigh Cross Country
The highlight of the weekend belonged to 13 year old Ella Moulding who commenced her 2014/2015 cross country campaign in fine style on Saturday. In uncharacteristically sunny and calm weather conditions, the meeting, staged at Leigh Sports Village, was the first in the Red Rose League series of races and the U15 girls 4K race followed a varied course of trails, woodland paths and fields. Ella was off to a good start from the gun and soon moved into second place following close behind the leading girl until the final 50m where she produced a turn of pace that was just enough to get her across the line in first place in 15:26.

Also on Saturday, was the Lea Town 10k.  Lytham had 2 representatives.  Peter Cruse finished 9th overall and 1st vet 50 in a time of 38:00 while Sylvia Gittins finished 79th and 2nd vet 65 in 55:37.  There were 89 runners overall with Rob Danson of Wesham being first home.

On Sunday, 2 LSARRC runners competed in the Nothern Vets AC 10,000 metres track championships at Leigh Sport Village.  Conditions were ideal over the 25 laps . First home from a field of 13 runners and leading the race from the gun was Wesham's Alex Rowe winning in a credible time of 35.39 minutes, a convincing win and taking the V55 gold medal.  Lytham's Graham Webster was 3rd overall and  who took V60 gold  in a time of 39.32 and for the ladies, Fiona Geldard, making her track debut, was 11 overall taking V50 gold and a 2 and half minute 10k PB in a time 0f 47.20.

LSARRC News 4th / 5th October 2014

LSARRC members at Lytham Hall 5k -
Left to right: Julia Rolfe, Dawn Bloor, Pamela Hardman, James Whitworth, Neil Tate,
Joe Greenwood, Willie Richmond, Graham Webster, Wade Agar and Ella Moulding
As might be expected with a race on their doorstep, Lytham St. Annes Road Runners were out in good numbers at the Lytham Hall 5K.  Fourteen including two from the Junior Section were competing and several more had come to shout on friends.

Mild sunshine and the lovely autumnal surroundings of Lytham Hall made this an attractive race.  It was also a gainful one for the Club with members taking away one overall race prize and four age group prizes.
Ella Moulding, third
woman

Youngest Lytham runner Ella Moulding, in one of her first road races, beat many much older runners to take the overall third women's prize.  Moulding, just 13 years old, revealed real future potential with an under 20.00 minute finish in 19:23 and 24th place, just 43 seconds behind seasoned winner Caroline Betmead of BWFAC.

Men's age category prizes went to Graham Webster, 20th in 19:12, first MV60 and well clear of the next in his age group and Willie Richmond, MV50, 37th in 20:32.

Pam Hardman celebrated her
birthday with a win in the FV55
Successful Lytham women were Dawn Bloor, who won first FV45 with a PB of 23:35 in 63rd place and Pamela Hardman, celebrating her birthday with a win in the FV55 where she finished 76th in 24:57, 25 seconds better than her 2013 time for the same course.

Joe Greenwood was Lytham's first finisher with a 9th placing and a time of 17:34.  Neil Tate was 17th in 18:56 and also running well was Richard Storey in 43rd place and 21:27.  James Whitworth, MV65, continues to make a steady improvement on his 5K times and finished in 25:58, 86th.  Felicity Wolohan also achieved a PB of 21:59, 49th.  Fiona Geldard, another cutting her standard times, finished in 23:06, 56th, bettering her existing PB by over 30 seconds.

Wade Agar, second MJ ahead of
Alex Wiggins
The Club's other junior runner was Wade Agar, who was 2nd Junior Man in very good PB of 24:00, 67th.  Alex Wiggins was 69th in 24:05 and Julia Rolfe, FV50, 85th in 25:49.  Potential LSARRC runner Austin Burrows finished a promising 56th in 22:25

Those who appreciated the autumn colours and atmosphere of Lytham Hall are likely to enjoy the Green Drive Five.  This well-known race similarly starts and finishes in a leafy environment a stones throw away in Green Drive off Park View Road on 19th October.  Doubling as the Lancashire Five Mile Championship it's a must for members of local clubs.  There's still time to make postal entries or enter on line in advance or just turn up on the day in time for the 11am start.

Other Lytham members ranged further afield.  Simon Denye and Louisa Ruman ran the Congleton Half Marathon.  It's a hard Half Marathon with undulating route that is rarely flat and tests competitors with a demanding climb in the twelve mile.  Denye, MV40, finished 35th in a field of 500 in 1:23:21 and Ruman, FV35, with an impressive improvement, knocked a full six minutes from her previous best with 1:56:14 for 367th place.  A day earlier Greg Oulton travelled to the Saddleworth Edges Fell Race for this 13km race with 350m of climb.  Saddleworth Moor provided testing conditions with steep climbs and a variety of obstacles and under-foot conditions which took their toll on competitors with Oulton himself, slowed by a tumble and a stop to aid an injured competitor, finishing 78th in 1:45:42.

Joanna Goorney, British Female Vet
Lead Climbing Champion
Liz Boon and John Wild with  fellow runner
following the successful completion of the
ChesterMarathon
Liz Boon and John Wild went for the endurance running, contesting the huge Chester Marathon and finishing respectively 2063rd in 4h 44:26 and 2144th in 4h 50:53.

Taking a rest from running, Joanna Goorney showed her talent and versatility by retaining her Female Veteran British Lead Climbing Championship at Sheffield climbing wall at the weekend.

LSARRC News 30th September 2014

On Thursday night, it was the last Club Handicap of the summer season which was enlivened by two notable performances. The winner with a PB was comparative newcomer Alan Elstone who just had the edge over runner-up Debbie Cooper after a close contest throughout the race that brought the best out of both. Cooper, a veteran of countless handicaps, is in very good form of late and finished only five seconds outside her PB for the 4.35 miles course set way back in September 2007.  A very determined Jeremy McCandless is still setting the pace at the top of the points table and if anyone is to challenge him for the trophy over the coming six months they’ll have to show some consistently good form.

September Handicap Results: 1, Alan Elstone 34.03; 2, Debbie Cooper 34.26; 3, Karen Lanigan 41.26; 4, Graham Webster 27.31; 5, Greg Oulton 34.46; 6, Joe Greenwood 25.03; 7, Jeremy McCandless 42.07; 8, Fiona Geldard 36.12; 9, Tom Howarth 29.06; 10, James Waller 44.14.

LSARRC juniors at Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde's T & F meet
A total of 10 Medals and 13 personal best performances was the tally for the twelve young Lytham St Annes athletes who competed at Blackpool Wyre & Fylde’s end of season track & field meeting on Saturday, a meeting in which competitors enjoyed weather conditions superior to those experienced at most of the summer competitions. Competing in her first track & field competition, eight year old Charlotte Thomson had a superb day finishing 5th in the 600m(2:30.8), 10th in the 80m(15.60) and 11th in long Jump(2.25m). In the same U9’s category Conner Norman and George Winstanley continued their improvement with Norman taking gold in the 80m (13.3PB) and silver in the Long Jump (2.9m) and Winstanley took gold in the 600m (2:07.7PB)  and finished 6th in the 80m ( 14.1PB). There were three junior members in the U11’s age group. Simon Holt ran a strong 600m to earn a silver medal with 1:55 and he sprinted his way to a bronze in the 80m with 12.1(PB) and finished 5th in the long jump (3.6m). Georgia Norman jumped a personal best of 3.6m in the long jump and, in the process, earned a bronze medal and she was 5th in the 600m (2:07.4) and 6th in the 80m (12.8). Carmen Cole improved further on her trio of personal best performances fourteen days prior to this meeting with further improvements in all three events. She was 4th in the Long Jump (3.52m), 12th in the 80m (13.1) and 12th in the 600m (2:21.8). In the U13’s category James Nicholas earned a podium position finishing 3rd in 100m (14.2) and Rosie Taylor ran a good personal best in the 600m finishing 6th in 2:55.3. All age groups were set off together in the girls 1500m event and three Lytham girls were amongst the starters. Hollie Winstanley ran well to finish 5th in the U13G age group (5:55.7). Ella Moulding and Hannah Riley were the two U15’s and Moulding set of with intent from the gun and soon established a comfortable lead on the rest of the field taking gold in 5:08.3(PB). Riley was in the mix throughout the race and she put in a spirited finish to take silver in 5:25 (PB).  As with the 1500m, all age groups were incorporated into one 800m race and Chloe Norman soon stamped her authority on the race moving into pole position at the end of the second lap. She went on to win the race comfortably with a personal best of 2:33.8.

Greg Oulton headed up north to Penrith to run the Orton Autumn 10k Fell Race also on Saturday. He found it a great race, not too onerous, difficult in places where the grass was really tufty and where he had to navigate limestone pavements, but nothing major.  He completed the course in 1:05:35 and 65th place

It was a busy day on Sunday with a number of races having representatives from LSARRC.

Debbie Cooper ran the 5th Swinton 10 mile road race in Manchester, an undulating two lap course.  Surprisingly, this was her first ever race at this distance, though normally she sticks to running on the fells.  Debbie, running at a steady pace,  was pleased to complete the course in 1:25:43 finishing 209th overall and 48th female.

It was also the annual Run Preston 5k and Run Preston 10k around the centre of Preston.  Graham Webster was first home for Lytham in the 5k in an excellent 19:08, finishing 9th overall and 1st vet 60.  Fiona Geldard was 60th in a time of 25:03 while James Whitworth was 78th in 26:55.  There was little rest for Fiona and Graham before they ran again in the 10k.

In Blackpool, it was a family affair at the Subway 5k in Stanley Park.  Simon Denye ran with  Sydney Ramsden (9) who ran well, George Denye (8) who ran 20:57 for a new PB (both are junior members of the club) and Jessica Ramsden (6) who also ran well and completed the course- Jessica is hoping to join LSARR as soon as she is 7.  Neil Tate ran with his father, brother, nephew, wife, 2 daughters (1 daughter Rebecca (age 11) is a junior member of LSARRC and fantastically completed the course in just over 22 minutes) and his son.
