On Sunday senior athlete Mel Koth completed the Southport standard triathlon, which included a 1500m lake swim, 40km cycle and finishing with a 10k run. It was a very high-quality field as it included the English triathlon championship and is a qualifier race for next year’s European championships.
Early start for the ladies, we went first into the water at 7am. The lake was unfortunately very algae and muddy. The swim was a 2-lap course and lots elbows, kicks and lots of pushing, proved challenging at times. After the swim straight out on the bike along the promenade, it was again 2 laps on closed roads. The wind was cold and breezy. Last of the disciplines was the run, 2 laps of 5k around the lake and the gardens till you finished at the marina lodge.Koth’s first triathlon race which is good preparation for the European championships in Romania in July. Times were as follows: Swim 33:19, Bike 1:21:43, and Run 44:45. Koth finished 74th lady, 7th v45, and 347th overall out of 544 triathletes.
With the Lytham Hall parkrun not taking place club members attended other parkruns. At the Blackpool parkrun Alistair Leivers was first to finish the course coming 7th overall in 19:22.
