LSARRC News 19th December 2017

Lytham’s Sue Samme’s return to form continued with an impressive run at the 3-1-5 5k in Lancaster on Saturday 16th.  The race is a fast flat, traffic free out and back course on a cycle path following the river Lune.  Sammé, in her first race as an FV55 and on her birthday, finished as second woman and ninth overall in a time of 19:53 (her fastest time for five years).  Sue also smashed the club FV55 record by nearly 3 minutes, achieved a club diamond standard time, took the lead in the Founders Trophy (an award for the best age related performance) and moved up to 6th in the country in her new age category in 2017.  Not everyone’s ideal way to start their birthday but Sue was very pleased with her performance.

Lytham St Annes Road Runners’ Club had a winner in Ross McKelvie on Sunday in the Christmas Cracker 10K in Lancaster.

Ross reported that it was a wet day with constant rain and a naughty little headwind on the on the way back. The course was otherwise fast and predominantly flat that took the racers out to Morecambe before turning and heading back into Lancaster across the Lune Millenium bridge. After a brief uphill near the end, the final 200m was round a grass field through slippery mud to the finish.

In second place until the final kilometre, Ross put in a great sprint to win in 37:17, a comfortable 23 seconds in front of the next competitor. Jen Fisher also ran well to finished twelfth overall in 44:30.

The juniors held their annual competition against Kirkham Grammar Junior School last Monday. Lytham had 15 athletes competing, although were a little short on boys and so some of the girls were in the boy’s teams!

The event started with the Speed bounce competition, with the boys winning their competition. There were great performances from the winning team of Charlie W, Archie, Freddie W, Matthew, Sophie and Samantha with Olivia doing 59 speed bounces in 20 seconds which was a record for the evening. Also performing well for the girls were Caitlin, Cleme, Amara and Leoma who all managed at least 50.

Archie achieved 2nd place in the boy’s Long jump competition, Freddie was 2nd in Triple jump and Olivia and Samantha were 1st and 2nd in the Vertical jump (boy’s team). Amara won the girl’s Vertical jump and Cleme the girl’s Javelin. The children then took part in the 1,2,3 and 4 lap races where they worked hard to achieve their positions.

Finally were the 4x1 and Obstacle Relays, where Lytham worked well as a team. Overall Lytham won the boy’s competition and Kirkham won the girl’s. The juniors from both teams enjoyed a super evening with every athlete competing in at least 5 events. It was lovely to see the smiles on the faces of the athletes. Despite many of the Lytham team being much younger than the Kirkham team they still gave their all.

In the Lytham Parkrun on Saturday Neil Tate was the first Lytham club runners in third, while Justin Allitt set a new pb of 19:01 to come fifth. James Buckley in sixteenth was the only other from the fifteen Lytham club runners to set a new pb.

On Sunday, in the Lytham Park View Junior Parkrun, Lytham’s George Denye and Charlie Ormerod were second and third respectively, while Emily Balshaw, in fifth overall, was the first girl. Jake Balshaw and Rebecca Fisher both set new pbs.
