LSARRC News 20th August 2019

LSARRC at Chorley Inter Club
A busy week for Lytham St Annes Road Runners started on Wednesday 14th with 32 members making their way to Astley Park for the 6th fixture in the Inter Club league.  Lytham’s women’s team performed particularly well with Liz Abbot (1st female in 29:12 for the undulating 4.7 mile course), Catherine Carrdus (2nd female and 1st FV45 in 32:08), Joanna Goorney (4th female and 2nd FV45 in 33:32), Maddy Markham (at just 15 running exceptionally well to finish as 5th female and 1st junior female in 33:43) and Mel Koth (6th female in 33:58) bringing the women’s team home comfortably in 1st place.  Carrdus, Goorney and Koth were joined by Louise Cox (36:02) and Claire Markham (39:52) to convincingly winning the FV40 team race.

Also representing Lytham were Joe Greenwood (15th in 29:01), Thomas Howarth (20th in 29:24), Alistair Leivers (21st in 29:46), Dominic Garrett  (35th in 30:45), Neil Tate (42nd in 31:32), Darryl Bentley (62nd in 33:15), David Butler (71st in 33:49), Ross McKelvie (128th in 37:11), Mick Widdup (139th in 37:55), Ben McCabe (147th in 38:30), Dan Gregson (157th in 39:19), Derreck Appleton (164th in 39:41), Sue Hawitt 173rd in 40:21), Pam Hardman (177th in 40:39), Debbie Cooper (183rd in 41:08), Roy Stevens (197th in 42:18), Peter Reid (212th in 43:29), Peter Thomson (224th in 44:41), Bob Clough (228th in 45:53), Julia Rolfe (236th in 46:39), Pam Binns (257th in 48:13),  Jeremy McCandless (260th in 48:19), Sylvia Gittins (271st in 49:32), Julie  Wiseman (274th in 50:57) and Sarah Bagshaw (291st in 66:50).
Lytham’s under 15 girl Rebecca Fisher was one of the youngest competitors in the under 15 age category in the discus at the Northern Athletics Championships (an event that attracts the best athletes in the North of England).  In the qualifying Fisher smashed her previous best of 22.62m by almost 3 metres qualifying for the final with a throw of 25.41m and went on to finish a very creditable 6th in the final.

On Saturday afternoon, 3 members of LSARRC made the trip over to Darwen for the Darwen Gala Catherine Dowdall Memorial Fell Race.  Disappointingly the The Darwen Gala was cancelled but the actual race was superbly organised by Darwen Running group with great marshalling, a well flagged course, with hot dogs, beer and soft drinks for finishers and a wealth of category and spot prizes. The 4.7 mile course with 928 feet of ascent has most of the climbing in the first 2.5 miles followed by a technical muddy descent added to by the recent very wet weather.  Luckily the sun shone all the way round.  First home for the club in 7th place and 1st vet 40 was Darryl Bentley in 41.48 closely followed by Joanna Goorney in 8th place, 41:55 and 1st female. Debbie Cooper was 33rd, 4th female and 1st vet 40 in 49:41.

6 Lytham athletes took part in a very windy Fleetwood Half marathon on Sunday.  Catherine Carrdus ran well to finish 37th overall and as 1st FV45 in 1:36:40.  Also representing Lytham were David Butler 39th in 1:36:58, Susan Hawitt (167th in 1:55:00), Roy Stevens (170th in (1:56:02), Kathy Gaunt (550th in 1:56:02) and Heide Haigh (243rd in 2:06:03).
