LSARRC News 5th December 2017

LSARRC impress at the Lancaster Half Marathon.

The Lancaster Half Marathon which includes a 5K Fun Run took place on Sunday 3rd December.  The Half Marathon started on the Lancaster cycle path alongside the River Lune and then headed towards the pretty village of Caton, before looping back towards Lancaster passing the start line.  The course then passed the Millennium Bridge, the Maritime museum and Carlisle Bridge and then the route continued down the Lancaster Quayside before heading for home.  Five Lytham members completed the route and they didn’t disappoint.  Mike Toft came 2nd overall after a fantastic run and Thomas Howarth wasn’t far behind in 13th.  Graham Webster ran a fantastic race, continuing his good form of late.  Full results:  Mike Toft 2nd place in 01:16:29, Thomas Howarth 01:23:37 (13th), Graham Webster 01:34:18 (38th), Chris Bowker 01:49:11 (88th), and Kirsten Burnett 01:54:29 (104th).  In the 5K fun run first position went to Ross McKelvie of LSARRC in a time of 18:00.  Well done to all.

Also on Sunday 3rd December saw 8 LSARRC participants in the Myerscough 10. This is a 10-mile road race, starting and finishing at Myerscough College, Bilsborrow, that has replaced the annual Guys 10 race.  Some of the course follows the old Guys 10 route but much of it is different as it meanders along some of the quiet rural lanes around Inskip. There were 258 runners enjoying the near perfect conditions for distance running. The race was won by Jack Wood of Ilkey Harriers in 53:54, with the first lady being local runner Emily Japp of Blackpool Wyre & Fylde AC in 1:00:41. First home for LSARRC was Felicity Wolohan in an impressive 01:07:23 for 31stplace overall. Elsewhere Julia Rolfe won the 1st FV55 prize finishingin 01:24:45, 140th overall.

Sunday also saw the Bill Fox Gravy Fell Race Fell Race take place, which was attended by Joanna Goorney of Lytham.  The race started in Tintwistle, near Glossop.  The pleasant and well-organized race was five and a half miles long with a thousand foot of ascent onto the moors with a very muddy descent through woodland.  Goorney finished 48th overall, 7th female and 1st vet 45 out of a field of 224 runners, in a time of 47:05.

The previous weekend, on Sunday 26th November Greg Oulton took part in the David Staff Memorial Fell Race, named in honor of a member of the organisers, Darwen Dashers, who died aged 17 of cardiac arrest, profits form the race were donated to Cardiac Risk in the Young.  Starting ins Sunnyhurst Woods, near the Kiosk pub, the race heads up to Darwen Tower, round the moors and back, taking in Aggie’s Staircase at the mid-way point, finishing back in Sunnyhurst Woods near the bandstand.  Oulton described the course as tough, with snow on the ground with 800 feet to climb over 4 miles.  Oulton finished the course in just over 50 minutes, and with this being the day after the Liverpool XC this was a good achievement.

At the Lytham Hall parkrun on Saturday 2nd December there were 26 Lytham runners, and some outstanding results were achieved.   Seven Lytham runners came in the top ten with Draper gaining first spot and Veevers 3rd.  Goorney was the first female home and Samme with a new pb was second female overall.  Third female position went to Gill Draper of Lytham, 4th to Jennifer Hill and 5th female spot to Emily Balshaw.

At other parkrun around the country Emily Hargreaves of Lytham attended the South Manchester parkrun and completed the course in 20:19, she was 19th overall and first female.  Terry Hellings ran the Basildon parkrun in a time of 22:19 for 8th position.  Finlay and Mark Hughes travelled to Birkenhead and ran the course in 23:15 and 23:19, respectively. 

The junior parkrun at Park View in Lytham was held on Sunday again there were a few Lytham juniors, 4 in total.  First home was Morgan Pritchard in 7:42 gaining first spot.  Lewis Bentley was second home for the club in 8:44. Jack Greaves ran 10:26 and Holly Anderson 15:13.
