LSARRC News 6th November 2018

The Saucony National Cross-Country Relay Championships was staged in Berry Hill Park in Mansfield on Saturday. The was the 30th year that the English Cross-Country Association have held the event at this venue and there were over one thousand teams entering the ten races.

Lytham St Anne’s Road Running Club entered a full team of four in the senior men’s event, each running a 5K leg. The event always attracts the country’s top cross-country athletes, and the bone-dry conditions led to fast times with several competitors running their legs in under 15 minutes.

Chris Bowker, Graham Webster, Jonathan Tuck and Neil Tate ran each leg in turn with Jonathan putting in the fastest time for Lytham. Out of 153 full teams to finish Lytham’s men finished 117th , no mean feat when competing against such a high standard.

Greg Oulton and Nigel Simpkin also made the 300-mile round trip to run in an incomplete team.
Lytham results from Mansfield. A Team: Leg 1, Chris Bowker 22:19. Leg2, Graham Webster, 22:21. Leg 3 Jonathan Tuck, 18:56 and leg 4, Neil Tate 19:25. Total team time 01:23:02. Also, Greg Oulton 27:42 and Nigel Simpkin 28:13.

On Sunday 4th November three intrepid Lytham runners headed up the motorway to Keswick for the Derwentwater 10, a rather hilly ten-mile race starting in Keswick. Going clockwise round Derwentwater and with a total climb of about 800 feet, it's certainly not a pb course, but hugely enjoyable. After all the rain the night before many of the roads had streams running down them with icy cold water straight off the mountain side.  The fine rain greeted the runners for the first 4 miles and then the sky became clear, the runners getting great views of Derwentwater whilst climbing to the top.

Pam Hardman was first home for Lytham in 1:30:20 (269th, 1st FV60, a new club record), Julia Rolfe finished in 1:32:07 (284th) with Greg Oulton in 350th place in 1:39:13.

Also, on Sunday it was the “35th through the villages” race, a very rural and tough 8.5miles around/ through the villages of wheelton, Brinscall and Abby village with some brutal inclines/ hills to test the stamina of the runners.
Perfect weather and great support around the course helped immensely to tackle the hills.

Melanie Koth and junior James Hartley represented Lytham.

Melanie Koth finished 51st overall, 4th lady and first V45 in a time of 59:47 (a course PB).

James Hartley finished 131st overall, 115th male and 2nd Junior Male in a time of 1:07:58.

Over the weekend several Lytham members completed parkruns around the country.  At the Lytham Hall Park parkrun Andrew Draper was first home securing 3rd place in 18:18 and Paul Veevers a second later for 4th.  Alex Tate was 7th in 19:14. Jennifer Hill was first female in 21:59 and junior Oliver Thomson impressed with a new pb of 22:16 for 31st spot.  Other Results included:  Neil Bayntun-Roberts 21:09 (16th), Darran Ames 21:11 (17th), James Buckley 21:24 (21st), Ben Gregson 21:55 (27th), G Browne 22:49 (39th), Gill Draper 24:03 (56th), Adrian Sargent 26:36 (100th), Laura Byrne 27:50 (112th), Bob Clough 27:53 (115th), Jeremy McCandless 27:56 (116th), Rebecca Willetts 28:44 (138th), Karen Lanigan 29:52 (156th), Graham Young 30:20 (167th), Julie Wiseman 30:29 (168th), Michelle Sheridan 34:44 (197th) and Kirsten Burnett 45:08 (219th).
